Spanning just 660 miles, the trip from Miami, FL to Atlanta, GA is often completed inside a single day of driving (about 10 hours behind the wheel). Our estimate for a full-service crew on this route is $2,000 to $4,900 for a typical 2-bedroom home.
The drive from Miami to Atlanta
Most trucks take Florida's Turnpike north out of South Florida, join I-75 near Wildwood, and stay on I-75 through Ocala, Gainesville, Valdosta and Macon into Atlanta. It is about 660 miles and close to 10 hours of driving with no stops. That is one long day for a professional driver, or two easier days if you are driving a rental truck yourself. Tifton or Valdosta, Georgia is a common halfway stop.
Florida's Turnpike is a toll road. It uses SunPass and Toll-By-Plate, so a rental truck without a transponder gets billed by plate, often with a rental company fee on top. Near Atlanta, I-75 has express lanes that use Georgia's Peach Pass. You never have to use them, and the regular lanes are free.
Try to roll into Atlanta outside weekday rush hours. I-75 and I-285, the loop road around the city that locals call the Perimeter, back up badly in the morning and late afternoon. Arriving mid-morning or on a weekend makes unloading much calmer.
Pick your moving month with the weather in mind
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and the busiest stretch is usually August through October. A storm can close roads or push your delivery date, so if you move in those months, keep important papers and medicine with you, not on the truck, and ask your mover how they handle weather delays.
Summer is also the busiest and most expensive time for movers everywhere. Late fall, after the worst of the storm season, and early spring are usually calmer and cheaper on this route. Atlanta can get ice a few days most winters, which can shut down roads there for a day or two.
Your mover must be licensed for interstate moves
Miami to Atlanta crosses a state line, so it is an interstate move. That means your mover has to be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and have a USDOT number. You can look the number up for free on the FMCSA website before you sign anything. By law, interstate movers must also give you the FMCSA booklet called "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move."
Get written estimates from at least three movers, and ask whether each one is binding (the price can't go up unless you add things) or non-binding. Be careful with any company that wants a big cash deposit up front or won't come look at your things, in person or by video.
Your first 30 days in Georgia
Georgia gives new residents 30 days to handle the car and license paperwork. Here is what to plan for, using the state's own rules:
- Driver's license: swap your Florida license for a Georgia one at a Department of Driver Services (DDS) center within 30 days of becoming a resident.
- Car title and tag: once you have the Georgia license, title and register your car at your County Tag Office within 30 days of moving. You'll need Georgia car insurance first.
- Car tax: Georgia charges a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT). New residents pay 3% of the car's fair market value, not the regular 7%. On a car worth $20,000, that is about $600, so budget for it.
- Fees: the Georgia Department of Revenue lists a $20 yearly registration fee and an $18 title fee.
- Income tax: Florida has no state income tax, but Georgia does. For 2026 it is a flat 4.99%, and the standard deduction is $15,000 for single filers or $30,000 for married couples filing together.
- Natural gas: in most of metro Atlanta, Atlanta Gas Light owns the pipes but does not sell gas. You pick a gas company (called a marketer) that is certified by the Georgia Public Service Commission. The PSC website lists them and compares their prices.
Simple Miami-to-Atlanta checklist
Use this in the weeks before the truck comes:
- 6 to 8 weeks out: get three written estimates and check each mover's USDOT number.
- 4 weeks out: book the mover and, if it's storm season, ask about weather delays.
- 3 weeks out: set up power and choose a gas marketer at your Atlanta address.
- 2 weeks out: forward your mail with USPS and tell your bank, doctors and car insurer about the move.
- Moving day: keep IDs, car title, medicine and pet records with you.
- Within 30 days: Georgia driver's license first, then car title and tag at the County Tag Office.
