The golden rule: pack in reverse order of need

Pack what you use least first. Books, decor, seasonal items, and guest rooms go first. The kitchen and your daily bathroom kit go last — and travel with you, not the truck.

Supplies you actually need

  • Small boxes for heavy things (books, tools, dishes)
  • Medium boxes for most household goods
  • Large boxes only for light, bulky items (pillows, lampshades)
  • Packing paper, not newspaper — ink transfers onto dishes
  • One roll of quality tape per 10 boxes, plus a tape gun

The labeling system that saves you weeks

Label every box on two sides with: room, contents (specific — "pots and pans," not "kitchen"), and priority. Use a color or number per room and tape a matching sign on each door at the new house. Mark "OPEN FIRST" boxes clearly.

Room-by-room order

  1. Storage areas (garage, attic, basement) — hardest, start here.
  2. Guest rooms and decor — books, art, collections.
  3. Living room and dining room — leave seating until last.
  4. Bedrooms — keep one week of clothes out per person.
  5. Kitchen — the most time-consuming room; budget a full day. Wrap every dish individually and pack plates vertically like records.
  6. Bathrooms — last, except one essentials kit.

What never goes on the truck

Documents, jewelry, medication, chargers, one set of bedding per person, basic tools, cleaning supplies, and anything flammable (movers cannot legally take paint, propane, or aerosols).

The first-night box

One clear bin per family: toilet paper, sheets, towels, phone chargers, snacks, basic dishes, a box cutter, and trash bags. When the truck arrives at 8pm and nobody can find anything, this box is the difference between a rough night and a meltdown.
